I expect hypermail to add it to the existing thread if the new message
contains a In-Reply-To: or References: header that indicates what message
it is replying to.
If you use the linkquotes option, it will also check quoted text to determine
which message it is replying to.
If hypermail is not behaving that way, or if someone can figure out what
Mutt is doing better, I'd be interested in knowing.
