[hypermail] patch: -g option cleanup

Poked around in the 2.1.4 hypermail source code.
Produced a patch to clean up the code around the "-g" option a bit.
Attached.

Background:
You might know me from the contrib/hoaf-28 directory.
This is actually missnomer as the abbreviation should read
haof for Hypermail Archive Overview File.
This was running nicely using the versions of hypermail 2b27,2b28 and 2b30
on the ffii.org Website. Due to certain circumstances I want
to have the same ability with the new hypermail versions again.
Will send two more follow mails with patches right now.
