In what way does hypermail communicate with your friend's email program? Your
letters are even in the ISO-8859-1 charset which is actually OK to assume
without specifying charset in a regular HTML page (AFAICR).

I think your friend is using a crappy mail program. If you could show us the
mail headers from a mail that *didn't* turn out fine, we could easily decide
if hypermail did wrong when parsing the mail or if your friend's mail program
sent messed up characters in the mail.
