You did leave out an ocean of details we could have used to attempt to
solve this:
* Hypermail version?
* Hypermail command line options
* config file
* Can you repeat this with an existing mail file?
* What does "could not be opened" mean?
* What did the attachment file really contain?
* Does the size of the attachment file differ from the orignally sent file?
* Is the web server configured to send proper mime types for .doc and .xls
files?
... and all other details you think matters.
